On 14th August 2002 Arsenal Football Club took another
step towards relocating to Ashburton Grove.
Demolition work has begun at Lough Road, Islington, in preparation for the
building of a new, state-of-the-art Waste and Recycling Centre. When that is
up and running, the current one - housed on the Ashburton Grove site - can
shut down and the construction of our new stadium can begin.
Striker Thierry Henry and Ken Friar, Arsenal director and co-ordinator of
the new stadium project, looked on as the clearance.
"It is the end of one stage and the commencement of another," Mr Friar told
Arsenal.com. "It is really exciting that we are now on site and people are
here clearing it.
"We have overcome the major obstacles, like planning. There are still the
compulsory purchase orders, which we need to be addressing. We will approach
that on an individual basis and we will try to be fair as possible."
